The Animal Protein Producers Industry (APPI) has been a standing committee of the National Renderers Association since the two organizations merged in 2006. It was established in 1984 to promote and heighten the production and manufacture of safe animal by-products by improving the microbiological and chemical quality of feed fat and animal proteins, to develop and disseminate educational materials and conduct seminars on controlling biological, chemical and physical hazards. The APPI Committee is responsible for the weekly process control verification testing and the Salmonella education program in North America, and will be considering other biosecurity program needs in the future. APPI became a program within the National Renderers Association on January 1, 2006, and is open to all renderers. APPI’s objectives are uniquely focused to assist member companies in manufacturing safe products.
The Rendering Industry Code of Practice was developed by APPI in 2004 and it corresponds very closely to the initiatives taking place throughout the entire food chain and furthers the concept of safe feed…healthy livestock…safe food…healthy people. With continued intense scrutiny on all feed ingredients, the development of the Code of Practice based on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) concepts show great foresight. The leading edge of the rendering industry is the committed renderers who participate in the Salmonella program and the Rendering Code of Practice.
